Something Finished and Something New

Another UFO bites the dust. I don't have a name for this quilt, I know the pattern came from the
Buggy Barnso I'll just call it Buggy Barn Stars.
I found the blocks when I cleaned the sewing room last month, not sure when I started this. I layed the blocks out and designed the border as soon as I came across the them, I sewed them together straight away, then it was put aside again. Maybe so I could do a sample for the shop any way I finished it Saturday, while waitng for the Nascar race to start. I did some free motion practicing on this quilt, wow I need a lot more practice, for sure. I did learn I could slow the motor speed and have a lot better contol over the length of my stitches, now if I could just make nice even turns.
And the quilt back, not sure what the spot is, came from the camera it is not on the quilt.
And a new project.

Saturday nights' disappoinment.

I was in a tither all day yesterday waiting for the Nascar season opener at Daytona.
It is a short race 60 laps I think, they call it the "Shoot Out", it was to air at 6pm in my time zone.

I made all my phone calls, hung out my DO NOT DISTURB sign.
I watched all the preshow events on the Speed channel, with excitement building , at 6 PM sharp I switched to Fox channel 12, the damn screen was BLANK, with a message that read. Don't bother to call us we are aware of the problem and are working on it.
Well they didn't work fast enough because the station was off all night and all day today. I was really dissapointed to miss this race.
I did try to call them, of course they didn't answer, I'm sure they had there phone off the hook.
I was finally able to find the audio on the Nascar site, so I did get to listen to the last part of the race.

Dale Jr was the winner, I feel like he really deserved a win, he really struggled all last year. Dale has a new sponser a new car, a new look and a new number, but I wasn't able to see his new look , BECAUSE MY SCREEN WAS BLANKDo you here me FOX channel 12?.

My favorite driver, a West Coast boy from Washington State is Kasy Kane, he has the same number this year but he has Dale Jr's old sponser Budwieser, so I didn't get to see his new look either,he did finish in the top 10 somewhere.


I became a Nascar fan about 4 years ago when Kasey was a rookie, ( just look at that sweeet face) I have been excited about following the races ever since.
My brother and I always have long talks about the races, he knows the history of all the drivers and events.
The Daytona 500 is next Sunday, if the station is having any trouble this week I will be knocking on thier door, and contacting Nascar.

Sharing my sewing room with you

After Corry at Dutch Blue shared her sewing room with us I decided while my cutting table was cleared off, to take a few pictures of my sewing room to share with you.

The door did open back against the wall where my rulers are hanging, the room is so tiny I had to make use of every inch of space.


Just to the right of my cutting table is the closet I gave a deep cleaning to on New Years Day, so far it is staying pretty orderly. Hanging between the closets you will see my one and only attempt at "Cathederal Windows".


I am very fortunate to have 2 large closets in this room , both have byfold doors so you can see the whole interior at once.



The ironing board, which is always up sits in front of the second closet making it tough to get to. If I want to get in that closet I squeeze around the ironing board then open the doors, if I open the door first I can't get past it, Or I try to stretch across the ironing board to reach inside. I need one of those handles with a grabber on the end.


Traveling around the room to the right, at the window, I just put up the new blind. I get the morning sun in this window which I love, but not in my eyes while I am sewing. I couldn't find one locally to fit my window so I ordered it from my favorite cheap place to get custom blinds made, Just Blinds
Above the window I have my radio, and a few things I rarely use and a couple rag dolls I made back when.



I have a sewing table that fits in the corner, which I really like, my sewing machine sets down in the table but doesn't completly fill the space so I am always losing things down the hole.


I am currently machine quilting a quilt I found during my deep cleaning of the closets, so another UFO bites the dust.

Beside the sewing table I have storage for my cut squares and strips.


And another UFO I hope to get done soon, I can't decide how I want to put the blocks together, so if I leave them there long enough, I'm sure I will get a brain storm, at least that's my hope.



Last but not least as you leave the room I have added a design wall in the hallway. These are "mile a minute" blocks I made a few weeks ago while cleaning up my scraps.

Christal's Quilt Ready To Go

Washed, Signed, Sealed and ready to ship.



Cymba just had to give it a test drive first.
I just love the look and feel of hand quilting after the quilt is washed for the first time.
You can read the story behind this quilt here.
It is very hard to trust the mail with a quilt such as this. It's like sending off one of your kids to camp for the first time, hard to let go. The quilt only has to travel about 400 miles, I'll just hold my breath until it gets there.

Super tuesday birthday

Here in the USA the media is calling it "Super Tuesday", nice of them to talk about my birthday that way.

A small sample of what was going on the year I was born.

Lockhead was building war planes.

Large ships war ships were being built.

Fashion was still important.
Women in uniform,
A soda pop was in a glass bottle for a nickel.

Everyone listened to the radio for news of the war.Civil Air Patrol was keeping a eye in the sky.

People made do with what they had, including cars.

A TIME SPAN QUILT

It has taken a span of 75 years and a illness for the this quilt to be finished, it is nearly there. My niece Christal, bought this quilt top from a donation center where she works,4 years ago. Christal knew when she gave it to me that I would love it and care for it, I told her at the time I would hand quilt it and it would be hers again, someday.
I added the borders from my stash, the border fabric is not true to a 30's fabric, but I thought it went nicely with the quilt, I used the same fabric on the back. If you know the name of this pattern please let me know. While working on the quilting I hauled this quilt across the United States and back, however the quilt got put aside, buried in a trunk for the last year or so, forgotten.

Until recently Christal had a close call with a medical emergency, she spent nearly 3 weeks in critical care unit with a infection in her mastoid bone behind her ear, which caused an infection in her brain, a very close call.
When I heard the news of her illness I immediately thought of this quilt.
I dug it out to find that I only had one border to finish the quilting and the binding to put on.

I put the quilt away because I always thought the binding needed to match the green in the quilt and someday I would find just the right green. But when I heard this bad news of Christal's illness, the perfect green didn't matter, finishing the quilt mattered.
Yesterday the binding was sewn on, brand new fabric, not the perfect green as it turns out, I think the binding works very well with the quilt.

Last night I made it half way around hand stitching the binding down tonight it will get finished. Then all I need is to add a label, and get it in the mail to her.
Any suggestions for the label?


Chris is at home now, but the doctors say it will take a good 3 months for her to recover completely.

This was a very easy pattern to follow and the pieces all fit together nicely, there was a generous amount of fabric included. I have done a few kits in the past that were either hard to follow or short on fabric not so with this one. I will take it to the shop in the morning to see if she wants it displayed as a top or wants me to quilt it.

More snow and another Quilt Shop Sample

I am glad I did my shopping yesterday, we have more snow this morning another 6" at least on top of what we already had. But thats okay with me I don't have to go out in it.

While I was out I stopped by "All About Quilts" and picked up a new kit that just came in to the store, Mary ask me to make this for a store sample.
This is by Moda, "Daydream Collection", the kit comes in this neat little zipper pouch, a wallhanging that measures 52" X 46" Included in the kit is a panel to cut into blocks, and

8 fat quarters plus enough of the dark brown for inside border and binding.


So while it is snowing outside I will be all warm and cozy working on the wallhanging project.

I took these photos at 5:30 this morning before anything had disturbed the snow, very peaceful at that time of the morning.
